IHI Project Overviews

Murray Smelter Demolition, Community Air Monitoring, Salt Lake City, Utah

During this high-profile demolition of two historic smelter smokestacks, IHI conducted community-wide air sampling for arsenic and asbestos to document the effectiveness of EPA air quality planning.

Pallas Yard, Remediation Project Design and Management, Salt Lake City, Utah

This fast-track environmental remediation project was designed and managed by IHI's Environmental Services Division. The EPA Brownfields site required intensive characterization and remediation prior to the construction of Salt Lake City's light rail system, TRAX.

Jordan River, Restoration Project Design and Management, Salt Lake City, Utah

A collaborative river restoration project designed and managed by IHI in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, TreeUtah and Great Salt Lake Audubon. The primary objective is the restoration of migratory bird habitat along several miles of the Jordan River using Superfund damage settlement funds from an abandoned steel smelter site.

Riverton Elementary School, Indoor Air Quality Investigation, Riverton, Utah

Following a high-profile indoor air quality episode, Riverton Elementary School was evacuated, closed and investigated for several months. IHI was responsible for assembling an expert panel of physicians, toxicologists, public health officials, school district personnel, and concerned parents to determine the causes of the incident.

I-15 Reconstruction Project, Hazardous Materials/Environmental Services, Salt Lake City, Utah

This $1.6 billion reconstruction of Interstate 15 required fast-track asbestos and lead surveys by IHI of all building and bridge structures impacted by construction. IHI later became responsible for a notable portion of environmental investigation and cleanup at various sites along the 19-mile corridor. IHI also assisted the general contractor in developing a stormwater management plan for the project.

Knight Mine, Coal Mine Reclamation Project Design/Management and Natural Resource Restoration, Sevier County, Utah

IHI received a 1998 Earth Day Award from The State of Utah's Board of Oil, Gas and Mining for 10 years of planning, project design, and oversight of a coal mine reclamation project in southern Utah.  The mine, which was owned by BHP Petroleum (Americas), Inc. was filled, sealed, graded, and re-seeded with native vegetation.  What was once an open mine site with little vegetation and erosion problems is now a self-sustaining, naturally vegetated area benefiting wildlife.  (Click here to view before and after pictures of the Knight Mine)

National Institute of Standards and Technology, Hazardous Materials Surveys, Boulder, Colorado

Over 1.5 million square feet of building space was inspected during a campus-wide comprehensive survey at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). All asbestos, lead, and radon survey information was imported into a Microsoft Access© database for future reference and use by the client.

City and County of Denver, Hazardous Materials Management, Denver, Colorado

Hazardous materials management services are being provided by IHI, including surveys, assessments, abatement oversight, and specialized database design and management for city agencies.

Peaches/East Peaches Uranium Mines, Reclamation Planning, Management, and Natural Resource Restoration, Gateway, Colorado

IHI was retained by BHP Petroleum (Americas), Inc. to revise outdated reclamation plans for two uranium mines in Colorado.  The mines required engineering designs that addressed the backfilling of over 15 portals, plugging two 300-foot deep vertical shafts, closure of an access road, and diversion of water channels away from the sites.  In addition, IHI prepared stormwater management plans and re-vegetation plans, which included scarification, fertilization, re-seeding, mulching, and monitoring of plant growth.  IHI also monitored ambient levels of gamma radiation at the mine sites, producing an iso-concentration map, which, combined with the use of personal protective equipment, ensured the safety of reclamation workers.  (Click here to view before and after pictures of the Peaches/East Peaches Mines)
